Update: please find govt approved modifiers at http://automateindia.in/dealer.htm

I think the “wizard” who made my dream of driving a car, come true, deserves an exclusive post. He is:

Mr. Bhaskaran

51, 2nd Street, Collector Nagar,

Opp to MMM.

Mogappair East,

Anna Nagar

CHENNAI – 600094

Mobile: 9841190690

To mention a few words about him, he is an obviously talented Automobile Engineer cum car modifier, who specialises in modifying cars for physically challenged people. He has modified more than 150 cars so far, with 100% success and satisfaction, including the top- guns like Mercedes Benz, using the Alfred Bekker system. For under just Rs 19,000 (this might be variable depending upon the car), he had fabricated and fitted custom built hand operated kit for the accelerator and brake and combined both into a single lever, which operates both, mutually exclusively, using a push-pull mechanism, which makes it fool proof. The whole process takes just about 4-6 days. As a client, I could not be any more happier with him, both as a car modifier and as a person. His work is impeccable, his manners, immaculate. He is a boon for physically handicapped people, atleast through out Tamil Nadu. He is a rare breed indeed, because, although there are many car modifiers in Chennai, finding such a car modifier for physically challenged people in Chennai, is like finding a pearl in a haystack. (Ya he is a Pearl!). Try searching cars for physically challenged, in Google and you will see what I talking about. I dedicate this post to him.

NB: Please read through the comment thread before posting your query. Chances are your question has already been answered.

Is it possible to modify a car for a person with 1 hand only(i mean upper limb amputee)…both the legs are working perfectly

2. Ragesh G R - December 17, 2007

@Anu: Well if the car is an automatic transmission, then there is no need of any modifications. A person with one hand and two legs can drive it normally as it is.

Karthiga - June 5, 2015

Hi,
I have similar problem, left hand paralyzed. Is it possible to get license? I have an automatic. I couldnt get doc certificate….

Yashwant - May 23, 2018

Hi Karthiga,
I myself am an right hand amputee and possess a DL in Maharashtra.

I have developed an electronic device and it is ARAI approved, it helps you control the secondary functions like Horn, Flash Light, Turn Indicators, Headlamps, Wiper without leaving the steering wheel while you drive- so that you can drive an automatic car.

Please do contact me on gaikwadyr@gmail.com

3. madhuri - January 30, 2008

hey, can a car be designed for a person with one limb affected and the other partially affected who walks properly using callipers?

4. Ragesh G R - January 30, 2008

@Madhuri: When you say one limb, u mean leg right?, of course, the system which I descried in the above post can be driven by such a person.

5. madhuri - January 30, 2008

left limb mostly affected and right partially…

susanta kumar sahu - January 2, 2012

left limb mostly affected and right partly

kaliyan ramasamy - December 22, 2012

Left limb mostly affected and right limb ok

6. Ragesh G R - January 30, 2008

Ya, its possible

7. Madhuri - January 31, 2008

What shud be the type of car for such persons

8. Ragesh G R - January 31, 2008

Go for a car with an automatic transmission, hence there is no clutch pedal, so one needs to modify only the accelerator and brakes.

9. Rajesh Krishnan - February 18, 2008

Dear Ragesh
I am a Paraplegic person. I would like to know whether a Maruti SX4 can be modified to a hand control vehicle

10. Ragesh G R - February 18, 2008

Any vehicle can be modified to be a hand control vehicle. But since there is no automatic version of the SX4 available in India, u got to modify the clutch as well, which will make driving a bit more complicated and also people who modify the clutch are very few.

11. ravindra - March 1, 2008

hi.
I have one rt.leg afftected .
I can walk freely but does not have enough power
for acclerator in rt leg.
what will u suggets for me..ravin.dream@gmail.com

12. Ragesh G R - March 1, 2008

Hi, If your left leg is fine, then you can drive any car : manual/automatic, with the accelerator modified to be hand operated. If your left leg too is affected, then you have to go for automatic car with both brake and accelerator modified to be hand operated.

13. L.Vijayaraghavan - March 3, 2008

Hi,
I am a person affected by polio in left leg. My right leg and both hands are fine. I would like to know what kind of car suits me and what alterations needed. I ask this because I have not driven an car thus far.

Vijayaraghavan

14. L.Vijayaraghavan - March 3, 2008

I read 4 or 5 of your posts and some posts of your friend kalpaka.
Happy for you and your batchmates. It is like learning how to enjoy life. But my prime years are slowly slipping by and i am in the process of getting matured(?). I was also as happy as u guys blog, until I got married. Apurama thane therinjadhu. So enjoy life to the fullest till u get married. Then life will start asking questions. Some silly and some serious. You will find it difficult to answer them, even if u are a person who could have breezed through your C.A. exams in 15 minutes preparation.

15. Ragesh G R - March 3, 2008

@Vijayaraghavan: Since your right leg is fine, all you need to do is just buy a car with automatic transmission. You need not do any mofication on it as it has only 2 pedals which can be operated by the right leg

Thanks for you wishes, I hope i can answer those questions if and when they surface in my life. Keep thinking positive, I am sure you too will.

16. L.Vijayaraghavan - March 5, 2008

Thanks, I was wearing a philosophical hat that day. I am always positive and try always to be practical.

17. Raja - March 6, 2008

I need a car modified for driving by my brother who is affected by Polio. He got limited strength in his legs. Let me know.

18. Ragesh G R - March 6, 2008

@Vijayaraghavan: Good to know 🙂

@Raja: Let him go for a car with automatic transmission , with accelerator and brake modified to be hand driven , just like mine.

Prasad Mukherjee - May 12, 2012

goo to know 🙂 really happy

19. S. padmanabha - March 24, 2008

Dear sir,

I am Padmanabha from Delhi and would like to go far a car which would be completely hand operated, My both legs are effected by Polio. I am acentral govt officre.I would also like to mention that you may tell me the model and cost that suits me best at the earliest.

Padmanabha

vinod yadav - May 25, 2013

Yes mam I have a car i10 auto with complete hand control sys them u don’t need any leg to drive it u can ask me on 09971543537

Suresh Yadav - June 27, 2015

Both lower limb not working hands both ok

20. Ragesh G R - March 24, 2008

@Padmanabha: Well if u can get someone to make a hand operated clutch apart from the accelerator and brakes, then, any car right from the Maruti 800 will do. As far as I know only one person does hand operated clutch. He is in mumbai. check out http://www.handicappedpeople.com/ . But if you are in luck you might find one in delhi itself.
But if you cant find any, buy an automatic car which does not have clutch pedal, so u need to get only the brake and accelerator modified. In that case, the Hyndai Santro Automatic is the cheapest automatic car in India at 4.6 lacs on road. The modifications will cost you another 20K.

Well, I am not a car modifier, and I am in Tamil Nadu. I got my car modified by Mr. Bhaskaran (refer the above post), You can contact him for further assistance.

27. Mari Rajan - May 6, 2008

Hi Ragesh,

I would like to appreciate your service, it gives me confident on driving a car..Me too affected with polio on my right leg, but my left leg and hands are fine, please suggest me whether i can modify a manual transmission Car (fuel may be diesel), and also if i want to learn driving before purchasing a car, is it possible in any driving schools in chennai. Please advice.

28. Ragesh G R - May 6, 2008

Hi Mari,

Thanks :). Glad that you are confident of driving a car. Since, your left leg is fine, you can modify a manual transmission car by just modifying the brakes and accelarator to hand controlled. But it is very rare that driving schools have such a modified car. But don’t worry, you can learn driving yourself after buying it. It took only one day for me to learn driving. So I am sure you too can do the same. So don’t bother about driving schools. Just that the awarness of rules etc should come from within.

29. Mari Rajan - May 6, 2008

Hi Ragesh,

Thanks for your prompt response..:)
How about for getting driving license in chennai. do we have any issues for getting it.

30. Bharat Dureja - May 7, 2008

Hi Rajesh,

Its really nice stuff that you have writeen. Its immense pleasure that I can find some one like you online who has such a good knowledge of cars.
I have the similar case as of you and have just purchased Santro AT and will be giving it for modification. i am in Bangalore.

i want you to give me tips how to it feels or difficult it is to dirve a car whose steering, brakes and accelerators are hand operated. What are the things that need to be taken care of.

If you dont mind me calling you, can i have your number so that i can discuss few things with you.

Thanks
Bharat Dureja

Vinod - May 16, 2009

Hi Ragesh i m Vinod my Right (full ) and left leg(partially) is affected by Polio can u use modifiable cars , If u have any contact of car modification garage in PUNE.

31. Ragesh G R - May 7, 2008

@Bharat: Thanks :). Congrats on your new Santro AT.
Well driving it is a pleasure, no difficulties what so ever. Took just one day for me to learn it confidently. You need to handle the steering with your right hand alone, and both the brakes and accelerator with your left hand, but its very convenient, because a single lever controls both the accelerator and the brakes. The lever, when pulled towards you, accelerates the car, and when pushed away from you, applies the brakes. It is very easy during stop – go city traffic.

As far as the steering is controlled, the Santro AT has the most smooth, easy, responsive and accurate power steering it’s category. So maneuvering the car is a piece of cake. In fact your can drive the car (the steering, accelerator and brakes, all 3) with just 3 fingers of your left hand alone, just in case you want to stretch your right hand and flex a muscle.

A small thing which needs to be taken care of is that since the car does n’t stall, even when the throttle is released, it will move at 5 km/hr, so u need to apply the brakes all the time, or shift it into N or P. Also, after coming to full stop, before shifting to P (Parking), hold the brakes with your right hand, and then use left hand to shift it into P. Overall the car will dance at your finger tips :). I have sent you a mail too with phone no:.

Convert any manual car to semi automatic , it is very cheap and easy to install the kit. It does not effect on fuel efficiency of car. It is very usefull in traffic were clutch pedal used frequently. It is also usefull to handicapped person with left leg. contact me for more information. phone no: suresh patel 09825227475, arvind patel 09825146978

37. Pulkit Bhandari - May 24, 2008

Hi Ragesh,

This is my first post on this forum. Recently I was searching for such forums as I am also in the process of buying a new car. I will let u know my case and then ask u few questions. Plz bear with me as it would a bit lengthy one.

I have a congenital (by birth) disability below the left arm elbow. as the development of the rest of my arm did not take place. Rest of my limbs (right hand as well as both the legs) are absolutely perfect. My father encouraged me to drive a normal car right in 8th standard. I used to drive my father’s Maruti 800 (a normal one) in and out of garage and apart from this i had also hit the roads in my 10th standard two-three times (i know i was not even old enough to get a learning license but still i managed to drive in a small city with less traffic without getting caught). After that i bumped into a side wall when i was parking my car and my dad was sitting next to me. He did shower some hard words which was understandable as quite a lot of damage was done. Thereafter my confidence took a big jolt. Till date (i have just finished my MBA and i will be starting of with my Job) i feel a bit nervous when i take my car out and as of now i live in Delhi.. I donot take it on roads. My problem has been (most of the times)… when i shift the gear from 2nd to 3rd gear (old Maruti 800 gears were a little hard as well). In doing so… first i have to bend a little bit on the left side to change it. Following this i lose a bit of control on the car as well. Second, at times the gear does not shifts easily and eventually the car slows down and is not ready to be shifted to third gear… and the gear is in neutral position. I know I have written a long post. I will shoot my questions now…

1) Do u think i really require a Automatic version car?
2) Is there a way of improving the shifting of gear from 2nd to 3rd with my specific disability been taken into consideration. so that the gear shifts easily.
3) Do you have any idea that how smooth the gears of the cars are nowdays. and which cars (small and mid sized cars) have a easy shifting of gears
4) i believe i will be able to change gears if the length of the rod of the gear is a bit longer (as compared to old Maruti 800 gear). So that i will not have to bend so much. do u have any info which cars might have a longer rod of the gear or any modification can be done to increase the length of the rod of the gear.
5) What all modifications can be done (taking my case specifically) with a normal car so that i can shift the gears easily.
6) Do let me know the modifications which can be done with normal cars as the mileage is a big issue with Automatic cars.
7) Last but not the least if i have to go with automatic version cars…which automatic car would be better-
Santro AT, wagon R AX or the most expected one to be launched Hyundai i10 Auto. Also let me know which car gives the best mileage out of the automatic ones.

With regards
Pulkit Bhandari

prawinarun - October 8, 2011

hi pulkit bhandari arun here.i have the same problem as your’s. i want to talk to you about this more. this is my e-mail address prawinarun@gmail.com. get in touch with me as soon as possible.

Yashwant - May 23, 2018

Namaste, Please contact me on gaikwadyr@gmail.com. I have a solution for you, like mentioned in below posts..

38. Ragesh G R - May 24, 2008

@Pulkit Bhandari:

Well this is not a forum per se, it is my blog post and this is the comment section. Anyways does n’t matter hee hee. Coz I wrote this particular post to help physically challenged people just like me.. 🙂

Don’t get dissapointed and do not lose confidence. Everyone bumps their car once or twice in the early stages.

Well since your left arm is not fully developed, I would suggest you go for an automatic car. I know mileage is a big issue, as I get only about 9-10 km/l from my Santro AT.

But from what you described, you find it very difficult to change gears, esp from 2 – 3 since it follows a Z pattern. Since you said you lose a bit of control over the car when you bend down, taking your long term safety and comfort (ex: a long journey of say 400 km, or a crowded street), I suggest you go for an automatic car.

Well, as an owner of a Santro AT, I think it is awesome, for it’s price. I could not find info on the mileage on Wagon R AX, but since Wagon R AX has only 3 gears compared to Santro AT’s 4, I suspect the mileage of Wagon R is going to be less than that of the Santro. As far as the i10 is concerned , it has the best comfort. poise and driveability, but it has the same 1.1 litre Santro engine but tuned to produce 3 more BHP, and the car is heavier, so I suspect i10’s mileage is also going to be less than that of the Santro, unless they really have a new 5 gear automatic tranmission, or if they make the gear ratios taller.

As far as normal cars are concerned, most modern cars today have smooth gear shifts. Among them i10 has a center console mounted gear shift, so I think you need not bend down so much..And also in all the reviews of the car, the gear shift was praised for it’s precision and smoothness. And coming to midsize cars, almost all have very smooth gear shifts. May be you just sit inside them and try it out.

I think if you could buy a car with steering mounted gear shift (like the old Ambassadors and Premier Padminis (Fiat 1100). it would be easy for you, but since no such cars are available now , do not mess with the gear box.

Some cars have sequential gear changes that is no gates. Push fwd for up and pull backwards for down. Some cars have steering mounted paddle shifts, but these two features are available only on luxury cars above 16 lacs.

So in the end, I would like you to go for an automatic, but you can just try out the i10 if you really want a manual transmission car.

Balasaheb Kale - July 2, 2015

Dear Sirs,

I’m a right upper limb amputee and can safely drive any automatic car without any modifications. I was living in Dubai and I’d a license to drive any automatic car there without any modifications. I’ve driven there with my kids in family without any problem whatsoever.

I’ve recently returned to India and have been coordinating with RTO, Latur in Maharashtra since Sep 2014 who is saying that as per the current law, I can be issued a license only for one automatic car that has to be modified (but they have not given me anything specific in writing as to what modifications do I need) and registered in my name.

They have asked me to find a retrofitter on my own (which would be in either Pune or Mumbai which is 400 + kms from where I stay) and know on my own what modifications do I need. Despite repeated requests, they have not given me any written letter mentioning the specifics about any modifications. I strongly feel directing me to an approved retrofitter along with a proper letter is their job and not mine.

Also, I have to travel regularly for work across India. What if I’ve to drive another automatic car at a different location where I cannot take the only car registered in my name?

Many thanks.

Balasaheb Kale

hi is there any car modifier in nagpur (maharashtra). for hand operated clutch of Tata india Xeta .

40. Neeraj - May 27, 2008

MR. Ragesh G R,
I am effected with both lower limb. Is there any possibility for this type of handicapped. I want to know that i am living in delhi and I have planned to buy a old car. Is there any possibility to compose the car in delhi . Pls reply me.

41. Ragesh G R - May 27, 2008

@Shrikant: There is one in Mumbai. Check out: http://www.handicappedpeople.com/help_desk.htm

I am not sure about Nagpur, but there might be..

Harshad - December 13, 2015

Can convert manual honda civic 2011 smodel manual car into automatic transmission… N if yes…wat will be its cost..n i want to convert it….

42. Ragesh G R - May 27, 2008

@Neeraj: Yes it is possible. There are two options. You can either buy a car with automatic transmission and modify the accelerator and brakes to be hand operated or buy a manual and apart from doing the above modifications, you gotta change the clutch as well. There must be such modifiers in Delhi, but I don’t have any info about them..

43. Neeraj - May 28, 2008

What will be cost for modification. How much extra charge will have to pay for a automatic transmitted car comparison to a simple car.

44. Ragesh G R - May 28, 2008

@Neeraj: Well, neither of your questions have a direct constant answer, because, the cost of the modifications depends on both the car and the kind of modification. For example. I paid Rs 17,000 to modify my automatic Santro Xing with hand operated accelerator and brakes. If you go for the clucth modification also, then it might be around 30,000-35,000.

The cost difference between an automatic and a normal car depends on the model of the car and also depends on which versions you are comparing. For example, my automatic Santro cost me about Rs 4.5 lac, which is 40,000 more than the top of the line manual version(XO) and 65,000 more than the equivalent manual version(XL). Again these prices vary between cities.

48. Ragesh G R - June 15, 2008

Hi Vinod: You can go for an automatic car with brakes and accelerators modified.. or a even a manual car if you can modify the clutch..

49. tony - June 16, 2008

Hi ragesh, thanks for the information. I have a spinal cord injury, so looking for an automatic(i10 or santro may be). I am from cochin, looking for a modifier here.
Can you send me some photos(mobile cam will be fine) of the handdrive system. Or if possible please post in this blog.
Also can you blog about how you got the license and the car registration procedures?
btw, how do we go up an incline from rest, using this hand controls?

regards
tony

50. Ragesh G R - June 16, 2008

Hi Tony:

Hope you buy your car soon. Yes, I have posted the photos in this post.

I registered it as a normal vehicle, since I needed the car quickly, else register it as an invalid carriage. For license, you need a doctors certificate saying u are fit to drive a hand controlled car, and a manufacturer’s certificate saying the modifications are safe. Hyundai does not provide such a certificate because the modification is not done by hyundai. In that case the RTO has to approve the modifications in the RC. Well, to go up an incline from rest, you can shift the gear to “D” and apply the throttle immediately. Well if you want to play it safe, then press the brake with the right hand, shift to “D” (or L or 2 as you please) with left hand, now hold the brake with the left hand, release your right hand and hold the steering wheel, now pull the throttle with left and off you go. It may seem complicated, but it is pretty simple and takes less than a second. 🙂

51. tony - June 17, 2008

Hi Ragesh,
Thanks a lot for the photos and your reply 🙂
The controls look really nice.
Just for the sake of knowing, is it a good idea to have the hand control on our right side? ie, steering with the left hand and lever in the right hand. what do you think about it?

Have a nice time driving..

52. Ragesh G R - June 17, 2008

Hi Tony,

Thanks 🙂
Ya one can have the control on the right side, because, one is gonna learn in that configuration and get used to it.
But your right hand may not have much space to move about, but on the + side, you can rest your right hand on the door pads/arm rests. So it is fine.

53. tony - June 18, 2008

You are right, it will be good to rest on the armrest.
On the -ve side it may interfere with our entry into the car. And also the use of left/right indicators, just my guess.

56. Venkatesh - June 23, 2008

Hi,

I have my left leg affected by polio completely. My right leg and my both hands are perfectly alright.

Now, I am planning to have a car for my use. Whats the alteration I need to do, If I purchase a car. Or any specific model is good for me?

Kindly advice.

57. Ragesh G R - June 23, 2008

Hi Venkatesh:

If you buy a car with automatic transmission, you can drive it without any alteration. If you buy a manual one, you have to modify its clutch pedal.

deepak - June 9, 2016

sir i have same problem as venktesh. i need hand operated clutch please provide me information regarding budget of hand operated clutch

58. Venkatesh - June 24, 2008

60. Kamal mongia - June 28, 2008

Hi Ragesh,

Heard about you from many people.. I own maruti 800 std 2003 mpfi model.I wanted to convert my car into power steering..please advice….

61. Ragesh G R - July 2, 2008

@Venkatesh:

If it is a manual, its the hand that will operate the clucth, the design I have heard about is, that it is vacuum assisted, so you pull the clucth with your hand, it will re-engage afer 3 seconds, by that time you change the gear.

The cars that have automatic transmission are:

Hyundai Santro AT
Wagon R AT
Hyundai i10 AT (Might be released later this year)
Maruti Zen AT (Not in production)
Maruti Esteem AT (Not in production)
Honda City CVT
Honda Civic

Other than this, almost all cars which cost above 10 lacs have an automatic model.

62. Ragesh G R - July 2, 2008

@Kamal:

Well, I am not a car modifer, I got a car modified so that I could drive it, being physically challened. Well as far as converting it into power steering is concerned, as far as I know, its not worth it, it might cost you nearly a lac and it is dangerous and it is not advisable to fiddle with such a vital component.

63. Anu - July 3, 2008

Hi Ragesh

Sorry to bother you

I have a question related to this….Do we get DL in India for physically challenged people. In case of people with both hands they definitely give but I am a right arm amputee and when I enquired in bangalore they just laughed it off as how can you drive without a hand…of course my legs are fine and my left arm is working all fine…but is it legally possible to have a license?

Thanks
Anu

prawinarun - June 16, 2011

hi anu my name is arun.i cannot use my left hand after i met with an accident.can i drive a car? will i be able to get license? please help me out.

do you have the same problem like me? did u get license? are u able to drive a car?

Yashwant - May 23, 2018

Hi Anu,
I myself am an right hand amputee and possess a DL in Maharashtra.

64. Ragesh G R - July 3, 2008

@Anu:Wel even for ppl with both hands, its not easy, its an ordeal. Well ., since two legs and one hand is fine, you should get license, but they themselves are confused about the rules 😦

65. suraj kurmar - August 21, 2008

66. Ragesh G R - August 21, 2008

@Suraj: I am not a car modifier, just that I got my car modified by Mr. Bhaskaran. Since his left leg is affected, I suggest you go for a car with an automatic transmission, then he can drive the car without any modifications

hi mr.rajesh thank you ill contact to mr.Basker he told me its hard to drive when modify the three pedals.. then he advice me buy a i10 its easy to drive when modify.. so i going to by i10 then modify its to my use.. thanks rajesh

70. christopher - September 6, 2008

what is auto tranmision?

71. Ragesh G R - September 6, 2008

Hi Cristopher, I too was about to suggest u for a car with auto transmission, like the Santro or i10 Automatic. Automatic transmission implies, that the gears will shift automatically, according to the speed of the engine and the throttle input, so you need not manually change gears, hence such cars do not have a clucth pedal, which will be very convenient for you, the same reason why I bought a Santro Xing with automatic transmission. Oh cool! get your i10 soon!:)

Manohar Venkataraman - July 17, 2009

hI, Ragesh G.R,

I have planned to buy a car. My Right leg and Right hand are affected by polio. Can I drive a car with auto transmission? or modification in the manual transmission car is sufficient? I know the mileage given by a automatic transmission car is less, is the maintenance cost of automatic transmission car is high? Kindly let me know.

Regards
V.Manohar

Ragesh G R - July 17, 2009

Hi Manohar,

Since your right hand is affected, your left hand will be fully occupied with the steering wheel. Hence please go for an automatic. You can drive an automatic without any modifications. Although pressing the accelerator with your left leg may be awkward. Yes the mileage given by an automatic is less. But then again, if you are keen on getting good mileage, you can drive it in a conservative manner. Maintenance is same. Not any higher than a manual transmission car, from my experirence for the last 2 years.

72. Rajkumar Karadalli - September 9, 2008

Dear Rajesh,

First of all I am happy to see your valuable advises given to physically challenged people in this Blog.

I am a physically challenged with polio to my left leg. I am staying in Bangalore. I am planning to buy i10 Magna with A/T. It would be great if you could suggest some contact person/address in Bangalore who can modify and provide hand controls for Break and Accelerator.

Also, I want to know will there be any problems/issues in getting the DL.

I have gone through some sites about the Central Excise Duty excemption on A/T cars for disabled people. Just want to know what is the procedure to avail this benifit. Also let me know whom to contact for this and approximately how much cost will come down after this excemption.

Would you please share your mobile number just in case i need some help from you.

Thanks a lot,

Regards,
Rajkumar Karadalli

73. Ragesh G R - September 9, 2008

@Raj: Thanks,. I have replied to you via email.

74. Rajesh - September 10, 2008

Hi,
I am affected with Polio fully on my left leg and partially on the Right. I would like to go for a Car which can be dirven with suitably mofications. Kindly suggest me a Car Model, Modifiers Detail and the approximate price for the same.

regards
nrajesh

75. Ragesh G R - September 10, 2008

Hi Rajesh,

You can go for any car with an automatic transmission. If your right leg is strong enough to operate the pedals, you need not do any modifications, since you can use the right leg to operate the accelerator and the brake. If your right leg is not strong enough, get the pedals modified to be hand controlled.

The car model depends on your budget. Some of them are:

Hyundai Santro Xing AT
Hyundai i10 AT
Maruti Suzuki Wagon R AT
Honda City CVT
Honda Civic AT
Mahindra Scorpio AT (latest arrival)

Almost all other cars above this range have an automatic version.

The Price also depends on the car. For example my Santro Xing AT cost me about Rs 18,000 to modify.

You can contact my modifier

Hi, if his left leg is fine, any car will do, as long as you modify the accelerator and brakes, if his left is leg is not fine, then buy an automatic, and do the same modifications.

There is one guy who modifies all 3 pedals, he is in Bombay : http://www.handicappedpeople.com/help_desk.htm

After the modification, the normal controls still remains in tact.

I do not know of anyone in hyderabad, enquire with some mechanics or car dealers.

You can contact my modifier in Chennai as well, whose details I have given in my above post.

81. Ragesh G R - September 19, 2008

96. A Ahamed Jalal - November 6, 2008

Dear Ragesh,

It is too nice to get in touch with you.
I am Jalal, a practicing Civil Engineer, residing at Chennai.
My left leg is with polio and my ambition has come true by modifying a car at Chennai. I have done the modification in Maruty Wagon R by having the brake and accelarator at hand. Thanks to my modifier and he has done it in excelent way and I feel more comfortable with the modification.
But I am not able to get the driving license and do the endorsement in my RC book as invalid Mortopr vechicle for the alteration done in the vechicle.
Can you advise in this regard, how to get the driving licence.

97. A Ahamed Jalal - November 6, 2008

Dear Ragesh,

Soory, it is not left leg and it is right leg affected by polio.
My left leg is alright which could operate clutch well.

A A Jalal

Hi, I am in Chennai. I was planning to learn driving recently and at that time came know it would be difficult to get a license as I am handicapped person on my right leg. Doctor’s suggested to go for a modified vehicle as they feel enough pressure can’t not be posed by the right leg as its used for brake. So,
* Pls tell me which vehicle will suit for this case?
* Even if we get a modified vehicle what is the process to get the license? Do we need Govt. Ortho Doctor’s clearance for this?
Between greatly appreciate your service spending time replying all queries in the right way in a most appropriate way. Keep going.

103. Abdul - November 19, 2008

107. Ragesh G R - November 20, 2008

@Abdul and girinath:

As in obtaining second hand modified cars, its very rare, because statistically less than 1% of the cars on the road are modified, may be you can post “wanted” some used car sites.

108. Ragesh G R - November 20, 2008

@Chirag:

Well, I do not know about Coimbatore, please enquire with your local car dealers.

109. Jaydeep Marathe - December 4, 2008

Jeyakumar M - January 11, 2012

Hi Mr Ragesh, Finally I bought i10 manual transmission in Jan 2010 and fitted with auto clutch kit manufactured by ‘automate’. Break and accelerator were modified to be operated by hands. Car is great to drive in city and high way. Sine 2 years completed, I thought of changing the car to a mini SUV like Maruti Ertiga.. My present car is run only 10000 kms. Anybody interested post me to my mail id mjeyakumar@ymail.com

Thanks a lot for this social responsibility.

115. Ragesh G R - December 8, 2008

@Sathyaprabha: Thanks a lot. Very glad that my blog helped you. This is exactly why I wrote this post, because when I wanted to modify my car, i found very little information. All the best with the modification 🙂

116. JaiGanesh - December 13, 2008

Hi, I am in Chennai. I was planning to learn driving recently and at that time came know it would be difficult to get a license as I am handicapped person on my left leg. what is the process to get the license?

117. JaiGanesh - December 13, 2008

Please anybody give me a reply as soon as possible for my above query

Ragesh G R - December 13, 2008

Hi,

Ya it is difficult to get license, you have to get a medical certificate from a doctor saying you are fit to drive. Then if you do any modification to the vehicle, you have to get manufacturer’s certificate , most manufacturers don’t give the certificate,

Else, you have to convince the RTO that the modifications are safe and he has to endorse the same on the registration certificate,

HEY BUT GOOD NEWS! Since you are affected only on your left leg, and you r right leg is fine, you can buy a car with automatic transmission, it does not have a clutch pedal, so you do not need to do any modifications to drive because the brake and the throttle can be operated by the right leg as usual. Then you might be able to get a license.

118. Dr Virender Singh - December 14, 2008

Hii
This is Dr Virender Singh from New Delhi. I am paraplegic person with 90% disability of both legs. I own Maruti WagonR LXi. I want to convert it into Hand Operable Car. Is it feasible with this Car? How convenient and safe will it be for me to drive after complete modification. Whats the cost?? and Who provides this facility in Delhi??

Nitin Gupta - February 13, 2011

Dear Dr. Virender Singh,
My name is Nitin Gupta. I read your post at http://www.rageshunleashed.wordpress.com where you were enquiring about car modification. I am a resident of Delhi and am searching for a similar functionality for my brother. My brother has walking disability but can operate his hands properly. I am thinking of buying a Maruti WagonR Automatic transmission for him. However, before I pursue the venture, I would like to have feedback for people who had done the same and thus is writing to you to get your perspective. I had a some questions
a) Did you get the car modified by Mr. Rupesh Gupta?
b) What modifications did you opt for?
c) Are you satisfied with the modifications?
d) If you had to do the whole thing again, would you make any changes

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Nitin

Hi Don’t worry abt the percentage, below 40 % should be fine I guess. Try asking the RTO if he will give u license with that certificate, else try to get an accurate certificate if that is the problem

Thank you very much for the information shared on ur website. I am a polio infected in left leg, I have used the device named City Clutch which has converted my car into a semiautmatic one. 135. amit - January 22, 2009

Hey Ragesh,

I’m basically wheelchair bound & I have a Zen AT EasyDrive TRC variant – factory fitted fully hand controlled AT version – apparently the last one Maruti rolled out since 2005. My car is now 4 years old & i want to sell it off to anyone who might need it. the problem is while buying the car i availed the excise deduction & gave a bond that i can’t dispose the car before 5 years – Is there a way of getting around this clause – i mean can i pay the excise dept some amount & gt rid of the strings attached or can i just sell the car off – Also any interested buyers may contact me thru your blog. then i want a Civic or an Outlander modified for myself – makes sense?

136. Deepak - January 22, 2009

hey amit i would be interested in buying the car if it is TN registered, could you please call me on 9841401207. thanks…deepak

147. amit - February 9, 2009

Hi, I have a 2005 model Zen AT EasyDrive (factory fitted with a full hand control device including indicators & horn on the hand control). the condition of the car is near new – its driven only around 2000 km The problem is when i bought the car, i signed a bond for an excise duty reduction of about 60k with the condition that i can’t sell the car for 5 years – is there a way around this? I mean can i pay some proportional duty & get to sell the car today (something that i really want to do asap, cos i have my eyes on the mitsubishi outlander which i’ll fit with a menox hand control kit imported from finland). Possible? Also, anyone looking for a Zen AT EasyDrive – Silver colour – pls advise how much you’re offering…

167. Sidharth Kulkarni - May 22, 2009

Hi Ragesh,
I am handicapped with an above elbow amputation of the left arm since 1995.This long note is for your info and to be shared with other persons affected. After my operation I approached RTO Mumbai who directed me to The All India Institute Of Physical Medicine & Rehab Centre,Haji Ali,Mumbai, where I underwent a driving fitness aptitude test and was issued with a Driving Fitness Certificate. The hosp cleared me to drive a auto transmission car, right hand drive with turn indicator knob on right side and a steering knob attached to the steering wheel. With this in mind I bought a Maruti Zen AT,went through two driving tests and was finally issued an Invalid Car Drivers Licence with the Regn number of the car endorsed on it.
After 1,40,000 kms and low milage 06 kpl the Zen was sold in end Feb 09,the new car purchased is a Honda City AT.The problem started when the car was taken for RTO regn. They stated that the rules have been changed by The Min of Surface Transport & Highways and as no fresh instructions were known, they could not register the car.I approached the MoST&H who have now directed The Transport Commissioner at Mumbai to undertake a safety check,as the rule book states that only a car which has been modified for a handicapped person can be registered as an Invalid veh,I know for sure that for my condition no modification is req other than attaching the steering knob.
Lets hope that the RTO do not come up with some idea of their own. This could be communicated with anyone with my condition so that they are aware of the new rules.

168. Ramesh S - May 26, 2009

I am a person with only right leg disability. Left leg and upper limbs are absolutely fine. I wanna buy a Hyundai i10 Magna automatic. Is it impossible to operate both brake and accelerator with my left leg???? I am ready to adjust myself a little on driver’s seat. If it is not at all possible then how much does it cost to shift the accelerator pedal left to the brake? Can this modification be done in any Hyundai authorised service centre?

Ragesh G R - June 21, 2009

I think if u adjust a bit you can operate both the brakes and accelarator with ur left leg.

173. Rajesh - June 22, 2009

Dear MR joy Chakroborty,

Hai Ragesh,

Ragesh G R - August 25, 2009

You can drive a car with automatic transmission, without any modifications, since they wont have a clutch pedal, so you need not your left leg. I also think you might get license, anyways your local RTO can help you out.

182. mir khan - August 21, 2009

hello ragesh, im from hyderabad,my right leg got affected due to polio, there were few surgeries also ,still its weak, i walk well, lead a very active life,i love outdoors, can i manage to drive a manual gypsy?or are there automatic gypsy s? can agypsy agypsy be converted to automatic?

Ragesh G R - August 25, 2009

Hi,

You can drive a manual Gypsy if you modify the brake and the acelerator, to be hand controlled. Automatic Gypsy is not avaiable. You can buy any automatic car, like Santro AT, Wagon R AT, i10 AT, i20 AT, Verna AT etc. even in that case you have to modufy brak and accelerator unless, you can adjust and operate brake and accelerator with left foot, will be a bit awkward.

b) , c), and d) will be taken care if you register the car as an Invalid carriage.

My daughter, staying in Hyderabad is a physically challenged person (aged 39), with her right leg affected which cannot be used for driving purposes. She is interested in owning Maruti Alto car. Now can this car be altered to facilitate her driving? I understand from the posts in your website that the accelerator can be fitted near the steering, while gear, clutch and brake will remain as they are.

In case this is feasible, what would be the cost of such alteration and whether such car can be delivered at Hyderabad? Or, is there a Car modifier at Hyderabad for Physically handicapped?

Please respond.

sudhakar - June 8, 2013

hi rajes and hari.
i too need same information

194. Harshita - September 18, 2009

Hi, I have a below elbow amputation on left side since birth. I use a cosmetic prosthesis which gives me a limb length and also support during activities. I have ben driving a TVS Scooty with modifications in the braking system ie. rear brake shifted on right and front ones on left. Also, I drive Aveo-UVA with manual gears, withour much difficulty. Only difficulty I face is when changing the gear from 2 to 3.

When I approached the RTO, I was told that I am ineligible to drive as my left side fingers do not move. I went to the Govt Hospital where I was told by the doctor-in-charge that supreme court has given a ruling that people with upper limb disabilities are ineligible for driving license. Over an above I was asked to approach the ministry of social welfare, New Delhi for redressal.

Going through all the above discussion, I feel that the information given to me is not correct. But still I would like to know whether any-one is aware of any such ruling by SC. Also, is there anyone in Chennai with upper limb disability who has managed to get the driving license. I would like to know how to proceed.

Hi,

I am so glad to see your posts… infact after seeing you in the website only my dream of driving a car came true. Thanks for motivating like me people. I am a physically handicapped in left leg. My right leg works fine also I can walk without any stick or any hold. Recenly I bought a Hyunai i10 magna Automatic transmission vehicle and am extremely happy that I am driving my car without any hassle. But my concern is that how to get a licence now. Can you guide how to get driving licence. When I visited the RTO office in nellai, they not only discouraged me driving a car but also told that they can not issue any driving licence to a handicapped person.
Is it true? If govt can not issue driving licence then how they are giving Excise duty exemption for physically handicapped purchasing a car.
Need your help please.

Rengamani

Guys, I want to SELL my Maruti ZEN AX – Factory Fitted Hand Controls (from Maruti) – apparently it was the last Zen they rolled out with factory fitted hand controls in India – clutch & gear – all Automatic – brake & Accelerator on the push-pull hand control (with indicators & horn on hand control too). Delhi Registered Number – its about 5 years old, very sparingly driven -done a bear 13-14000 km – in a brand new condition – (was driven only by me) – since Maruti offered only a basic car – i installed an A/C (subros) + power windows + central locking. Apparently it has a excise exemption on it which involved a 5 year bond – binding me to sell it for 5 years – now 5 years are over & its fully sellable – Price i’m looking at is 2.8 Lacs – ofcourse it could go at this price in the open market – but i’d rather sell it to some person who needs it (since i’m still on the wheelchair but upgraded to a hand control driven skoda recently). If interested Email me at: amitmanga@gmail.com

Hi,

My right leg and right hand affected with Polio, can it be possible to modify a car to drive for me.

could you please suggest. thanks in advance.

regards,
ramanji

301. sharma s - March 1, 2011

@Ramanji yes u can drive with the controls mentioned in this article, but i can’t tell about the steering since these controls are on the left and u will be using left hand to control brake and accelerator, and you can’t use the steering while using brakes and accelerator. If it was in USA or UK there are options to control steering by a lever.since you mentioned u can use left leg buy an automatic car which do not have clutch and gear needs to be used once or twice after you start and stop the car press the brake and accelerator with your left leg and use the steering and gear by your left hand.

Dear Rajesh,

I am Naren, couple of months back I bought an Alto LXi. If only I had enquired properly or googled I would have gone for a i10. I read all your valubale reply to each one, wonderful. Coming to my question; my wife is physically challenged, her right leg is polio affected and walks with claipers. Now buying a separate car for her is not affordable by me. So can I modify my Alto without disturbing the existing manual mechanism, so that my wife and I can drive the same vechicle? Please advice.
Thanks & Reagrds

Bhaskar - June 9, 2011

Hii Narendran

Yes u can modify the same vehicle by fitting City clutch for it. the clutch will be automatic and your wife can use her left leg to control break and accelerator and at the same time you can also drive the car with or without using the city clutch. It will be like driving an auto transmission car only.

Hi , my friend requires a automatic car indicator since his right hand is amputed he is finding very difficult to opoerate indicator switch manually with his only left hand . Kindly refer some contacts where i can find help. Is there any provision for driving license in such a case where right hand is amputated. If yes quote the clause where we can claim the same under the provision of law.

cbmishra - September 27, 2011

Few years back Maruti Zen AX Easy Drive was available in 9 combinations including the disability described by you. few modifiers can modify the car according to your need viz. handicapped people.com, mobilityaids.org, Mr. Bhaskaran from Chennai. Lastly
there is provision for driving license in such a case where right hand is amputated subjected to provisions for INVALID CARRIAGE Vehicles provisions in Motor Vehicle Act and Certificate from Civil Surgeon of ur district.

Dear Mr. C K Sahoo
I m also a person with same disability and i m driving an A-star AT with an auxiliary accelerator on left side(fold-able in nature so that normal person can also use it) since 8 months modified by Mr. Ferdi from Mumbai (handicappedpeople.com) interiors are untouched so nobody can say that it is a modified car. It’s a very nice car with decent mileage as compared to other AT cars(12-13 kmpl city and17-18 kmpl highway without AC)

335. C.B. Mishra - August 22, 2011

Dear Mr. suresh
There r 2 options for you
1)Go for an Auto-transmission car. You can drive it legaly without any modification just after getting licence from RTO but running cost of AT car is much higher.
2) Go for hand control clutch attachment. It costs about 20,000 Rs. but running cost will be equal to Manual transmission car

hello
i have muscular dystrophy and have very little movement in my hands and legs is something available for me by which i can drive a car, something like this-

this-

and this-

Note i can’t control steering with my hands, nor press the break and accelerator with my legs, not sure if i can use your type of hand controls to operate brake and accelerator (i need joystick type controller).I was wondering if there’s city clutch (clutch operated by buttons) in India it should be possible to make brake and accelerator to operate thru buttons or joystick. The people at http://semiautomaticar.blogspot.com/ (the ones that made city clutch),have a picture of their upcoming product called Hand Operated brake and Accelarator in their site here-

is it electrically operated,if so when will they release it.

356. Bhaskar Madas - November 21, 2011

For the benefit of many friends who want to buy a car and drive in India, the steps to be followed are given below. Please email me to bhaskarmadas@yahoo.com if you need further help/details:

1. Decide which car you want to buy and drive.

2. Approach some mechanic who can modify the car. I can give you contact numbers of people who can fit handcontrol device in Chennai and Bangalore.

3. Discuss with car manufacturer/show room and tell them you want the invoice as “Invalid Carriage”. This is most important and critical step. Most of the car manufacturers will not accept, but explain your requirement and get their confirmation before proceeding to next step.

4. Meet RTO where you want to register the car and explain your problem, and intention of driving an “invalid carriage”. Give him brief write-up (design note) about the modifications planned etc.

5. If RTO is convinced and agreeable to give you driver license, go ahead with implementing your plan. Make purchase request, get the invoice, register the car as “Invalid Carriage”, fit with handcontrol device and show to RTO.

6. Then RTO will issue you Learner’s license with your car number on it. You have to learn driving in 6 months.

7. On or before the expiry date of Learner’s license, visit RTO and take driving test.

8. If you are successful, RTO will issue a “Driving Licence” with your car number, validity etc.

372. Mayank K. Bhatt - January 18, 2012

Dear Sir,

I am Mayank Bhatt, from Vapi (Gujarat). I am having disability in my right leg below knee and am wearing an artificial limb which is very comfortable in walking and running too and both hands working perfectly, ha but for your information i am not having last finger and have only half ring finger in my left hand but it has proper grip and i don’t find any difficulty due to that. Hmmm here i would like to say that i really feel very lucky to do so and live a normal life as others without any disability do. And i also drive two wheeler moped, as well as geared bike without any modifications in it and i can brake also properly with my artificial limb. But you too must be knowing that we people don’t get license according to Law for two wheeler or car without any modifications done in it. Hmmm sorry for so much long texts now lets come on point….ah i want a car license so can you please tell me:-

1) according to my physical condition which car will suit me and what type of modifications will be needed in it and also its price.

2) and also from where i can get such car and modifications are done directly by the dealer of the car or i have to approach any third party i mean any garage or such centre to make the modifications done as required.

My warm regards to you and before ending i would like to say that you’re doing a good job here coz you inspire and help many people like us. Will wait for your kind reply. 🙂

This is an urnest request to all car owner who modified their car to attach a hand clutch to comment please. I have my left leg amputated above knee. I would like to add a hand clutch in a manual transmission but my question is “Is it possible to really drive the car with the modification in Indian city road condition considering traffic and no law. Is it possible to reverse and make a parallel parking. I know some would say nothing is impossible but I would like to hear from the people who are doing it every day”. Please help me to make a decision by commenting. Thanks to all in advance…and by the way I am from Kolkata

Hi Samir,

It is easy according to me. because my both legs not functioning. but i still have my i10 with cityclutch driving in chennai. I have seen people driving cars with both and single leg affected with cityclutch control.

so for you it should be very easy than me. all the best.

413. Samir - February 20, 2013

Hi Anand,
Thank you a ton for your reply. However during my surfing of the webpages on cityclutch I came across few posts where the users of cityclutch mentioned it not so reliable and the system stopped functioning sometims, according to them. If that happens in my case I will be completely helpless and can not drive the car.
Since you are an user of cityclutch can you please share your experience?

anand - February 21, 2013

Sam.ir, may be true. I never experienced so far in last 1 year. Also spoke few guys they said they had no issues 1 or 2 years. I also saw autoclutch (automate ) which had issues. Your fear is very much valid, even i too have. Automatic is good choice. We have service centres everywhere , but for autoclutch we need to sent to pune and wait . Take wise decision.

anand - February 21, 2013

Amir i meant automatic cars. For cityclutch need to sent to pune only

Dastagir - April 15, 2013
414. Samir - February 23, 2013

Thanks Anand for your kind response. Automatic is very good choice I would say. however with semi-auto (cityclutch or automate) the choice of cars just widens.

yesterday i went to Maruti dealers and listening to AT they seems fall from sky. No car for TD and even if I order they said it will take min 3 months. I will try Hyunai tomorrow and post my experience.
I have a question to Anand, after attaching cityclutch whether the warranty of the car still remains same? as it is an alteration

anilsuthar - April 28, 2013

hello samir ji…after attaching citycluch the warrnty of the car stiil reamains,no issu about warrnty.enjoy

anand - April 28, 2013

Samit,

warrantly remains the same. because cityclutch just connects to clutch pedal only. it is just external device like music system. if you look for comfort, and easy to get license (RDO may look for Automatic cars). in bangalore it is easy to get license without automatic gear. in chennai it is little difficult without AT.

so no issue with warranty, also think of support if any issues in cityclutch. i have a machanic near by in chennai, who is also installing.

Support is a big issue for those who installed and will be installing in Kolkata. I asked the dealer of cityclutch and they said nobody is in Kol. So a mechanical Alfred Bekker type just may be better.

438. Samir - August 11, 2013

Friends, today I modified my manual car with hand operated clutch. My left leg is affected hence it is sufficient for me. Mr Rajesh Sharma has done this modification. Afterwards, I went for a drive to get accustomed with the car. He is really a very nice person and charge nominally. After the drive I can see that either both leg or single leg disabled can use the hand control. It is very simple and easy

Hi Ragesh ! thanks for providing very useful info to all the persons with physical disabilities. i am affected by polio on left leg and i am wearing a caliper. My right leg is normal. I am planning to buy i10. But before that i would like to learn driving. When i enquired few driving institutes i found out that they do not teach with the automatic transmission vehicle. Hence can you suggest some driving schools in chennai which use the automatic vehicles and teach people like us (am located near porur) – Suja

440. Samir - September 15, 2013

Sujatha, I can give u a suggestion. You go and negotiate with the school that they will operate the Clutch for you(they have extra clutch& brake on their side). Once you learn the steering control buy ur own can and learn. That’s how I learnt

499. Nazeer - October 7, 2015

Hi Ragesh, Greetings!
Though its been very long still want to congratulate you for getting a car to drive.

My case here is very different and hope you suggest me a suitable way to get out of this.

I am handicapped by RIGHT leg and my Left is all perfect, I have drove automatic vehicles without any issue and fancy to buy Honda Jazz automatic car. But I have been informed that there will be post problems for registration of CAR and getting a valid licence.

I heard to get licence first you have to own a invalid carriage registered car on your name and they apply for Invalid carriage [IC] licence.

All fine, but how will I get my car on IC when I am not doing any modifications to it since I can comfortably drive it with left leg. Also, Is it must that handicapped people should only have IC licence because I am not going to ride bike any time and for car I am very comfortable with left so why IC not LMV licence. Hope you got me! Thanks.

Mr. Baskaran Sir really a pearl. He deserves it. I have modified my car with hand control in fair price (Rs. 25,000) and the model is very simple. It’s easy to drive for both normal person and me. My husband says its easier & comfort, then controlling acc/break in the leg. Thanks to Baskaran sir.

Hi,

My name is Rakesh and I live in Lucknow. I am problem with both the legs and with right hand (can not lift more than 50 to 60 degree). Is there a possibility to modify car for me. I have Alto LXI, can this car be modified for me or I need to buy another car for modification purpose.

I drive scooter which is a modified one and walk comfortably with calipers and elbow crutch.

If there is a possibility then would like to know the tentative cost and your expenses for traveling to Lucknow.

Hoping for a feasible solution.
